Sophie Bell - #CareersInAg Ambassador

My name is Sophie, 25 year old Harper Adams university graduate. I am currently a farmer in partnership with a parent, a civil servant, content creator and a Masters student in UCD.

I initially studied at Harper Adams university which I thoroughly enjoyed, it was a wonderful experience and lead to so many opportunities. I decided to come home after my studies to start managing the farm, where I decided to convert the farm into a contract rearing enterprise due to the small size and our time constraints this was the most financially viable and labour efficient option for the farm. So far three years down the line it has proven very successful and we are happy with how the farm is now progressing.

I work full time and also spend a lot of time creating content and working on social media campaigns and collaborations. I am also a masters student. What I want to promote is the fact that I came from a tiny farm, with barely any practical experience, which is known to be quite a barrier to being in the industry but I hope my story can inspire and show others that it isn’t the “be all and end all” by not coming from a large farm, which seems to be a significant stigma.

I embody a unique blend of dedication, passion, and a thirst for knowledge. With a profound love for the land and an insatiable curiosity for animal science, I have managed to successfully balance my roles as a farmer and a student, creating a harmonious synergy between my passions.

Growing up in a rural community, I developed an early connection with nature and a deep appreciation for the agricultural industry. From growing up around livestock, I quickly discovered the profound satisfaction that comes from nurturing the land and contributing to the local food system. Driven by a desire to expand my knowledge and skills, I pursued higher education while continuing my farming endeavours. I recognised that a formal education would not only enhance my practical skills but also provide me with a broader perspective on sustainable farming practices and agricultural innovations.

My dedication to learning extends beyond the classroom, as I actively participate in workshops, conferences, and industry events to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments. In my role as a farmer, I exemplify a deep sense of responsibility towards the environment and the community. I prioritise sustainable farming practices, ensuring that my operations have minimal impact on the ecosystem.

Balancing the demands of farming and academia is no easy feat, but I embrace the challenge with grace and resilience.
