Head Herdsperson/Herd Manager
Isle of Wight – Ref: SASCweb2615

An exciting opportunity has arisen on the IOW to manage a nice herd of cows on a day-to-day basis. The herd consists of 140 white and caramel coloured Gurnsey cattle, at Briddlesford Farm, which is situated in a lovely location close to Ryde. The herd is calved all year round and milked through a 2-year-old 12:24 HB Dairymaster parlour. The herd is loose housed, semi TMR fed and topped up via OOPF’S.  Calves and youngstock are all reared on site. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and running the unit with input from the owner.

They will be required to milk, undertake cow herd health, breeding, and overseeing all the other aspects of running a successful herd. Feeding, scraping, and bedding are mainly undertaken by other members of the team. This is part of a wider business that has other enterprises including an on-farm processing plant, that utilises all the milk from the herd, plus additional milk from other farms on the island.

Milk, cheese, and butter are processed and sold in the on-site farm shop and café, together with beef and veal from the unit. We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic person who can lead the team of three to improve yields and herd health. They must have good communication skills as the farm has many visitors.

An excellent package is on offer to the successful candidate to include suitable accommodation.
